Thanksgiving Weekend Part I

We had a very nice, relaxing Thanksgiving Day at home.  My husband (and daughter) ended up doing most of the cooking.  I put together the green bean casserole and was in charge of washing the dishes.  I’d say I got off easy this year.  While my husband was busy in the kitchen I was working on blog posts, photo taking, knitting, embroidering, catching glimpses of the Macy’s parade rebroadcast on television, and other little things that came up.  Sitting around doing nothing makes me so tired, so I am always busy, but cooking is not my favorite thing to do; I’d much rather clean up.

We had pretty traditional dishes for our dinner:  candied sweet potatoes (my husband’s first time making them and they were much better than mine), stuffing, turkey breast, green bean casserole, rolls, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, sparking grape juice, and a vegan pumpkin pie (very good). Needless to say, we all ate too much.  Today, Saturday, we still have lots of leftovers except for the green bean casserole.  Since we have ingredients for another one I will put one in the oven today.

Something that we’ve been doing for many years now is to go to a Christmas tree farm on the day after Thanksgiving.  We have two small farms within minutes of our house, but in the last six years or so we have been opting for the full Christmas tree farm experience and drive a little further to see more varieties of trees, get a fun tractor ride, eat homemade donuts, fudge, browse the ornaments in their heated barn, etc.

Weather-wise it wasn’t the best day:  cold, windy, EXTREMELY muddy (cars were getting stuck in the mud), cloudy; but we got our fraser fir tree.  The needles aren’t too sharp on this variety, so it’s a nicer experience putting the lights on, which my husband is doing right now.

We brought along our chihuahua.  This little girl loved him; I thought it was so cute.  Even though he had his parka (the only clothing he will tolerate) on, I think he was cold.  He has very little fur on his belly and the tiniest paws that get cold so quickly.

The birds and (greedy) squirrels were very busy at the feeder yesterday morning.  I caught some photos of the birds through the window.  You can see some in mid flight.  This morning the feeder is completely empty and so is our bird seed pantry.  Time to go shopping…

I quickly snapped a photo of Amelia’s new Christmas dress.  Don’t you love these blown glass Christmas trees?  I picked them up at our church’s rummage sale this past  June.

That’s all for now.  We have a busy day today and also hope to get our tree decorated.  Thanks for reading and I hope you all enjoy the weekend.

Happy Thanksgiving (to my US readers)

We are waking up to the perfect Thanksgiving weather—dark, damp, and cool.  It doesn’t feel like winter any longer;  (Yay!)  except for a few piles here and there the snow has melted.  Soon the house will smell like roasting turkey.  It’s just me and my little family enjoying Thanksgiving at home today, but we will have all of the goodies—turkey breast, stuffing, candied sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie; needless to say there will be leftovers for a few days, at least.

I am thankful for so many things including all of you, my readers!  You can see Riley has a LONG list of all that she is thankful for.  (This is a photo of her from 2005).

My husband likes to cook and got busy on the stuffing and potatoes yesterday while I was busy embroidering and finishing up red Christmas dresses and Santa hats for the tines.  Isn’t he great?

This was my handful of knitted pieces yesterday morning.  I finished the two red sets for Pukipuki and Amelia Thimble.  I need to take photos and write up my website pages for them and then they will be for sale to dress a couple of cuties this holiday season.  The winter white set will be for Kish Alisha and coordinate with the other winter white sweater dresses I just completed.  The aqua blue dress is for Millie.

Major improvement from last weekend, wouldn’t you say?  It’s pretty when it snows, but then it is nice for it to melt right away too, in my opinion.

There are still apples on the tree!  It is so nice to see the green grass again!

My husband like to pump the excess water off the pool cover to relieve the stress on the plastic cover, so that is what he is busy doing (in case you were wondering).

Our pachysandra is uncovered again.  The honeysuckle bush never had a chance to drop its leaves.  I wonder if those will fall off now.

This is our golden retriever’s favorite holiday.  She gets LOTS of turkey today.  Poultry makes our little chihuahua itchy, so he needs to abstain.  I’ll give him something else though.

Have a great day everyone (even if it isn’t a holiday for you).  I am so thankful for all of you!

Bye for now!

Instant Winter!

Well, we have instant coffee and pudding, instant messaging, and now instant winter… for us in northern Illinois anyway.  Yesterday it was over a foot of snow and this morning it is 10℉ (-12℃), so it is definitely wintry out there.

Oh, what fun!!!  No, not really…  The only GREAT thing is that by the end of the week it will be in the 50s again!  Yay!

As the sun was coming up, I took some icy looking pictures.  Can you feel how cold it is?

So, who do you think models it better, Lucy (top) or Gina?

Bye for now!  I’ll be back later with the post for this ensemble.  Have a great day!
