About Cindy Rice

My wonderful husband, my beautiful daughter, and I live in northeastern Illinois with our two sweet chihuahua boys. For as long as I can remember I have loved dolls and making things. I got my first Barbie when I was only three years old! My mom sewed for my Barbie dolls and taught me how to use her sewing machine when I was only seven. I cannot believe she let me near that needle, but she did. Not having enough money for my clothes habit in high school and college led me to start sewing all of my own clothes. There were so many fabric stores around back then and fabric was so inexpensive. I would wait for the 99 cent pattern sale and go crazy. Sewing for myself continued well into my 30’s. (I even made my wedding gown and bridesmaid dresses.) Shortly after I got married I left my full time graphic design position and started designing cross stitch patterns. I called my company “The Lilac Studio” and sold my botanical patterns at trade shows, through distributors which sold to retail shops, and mail order. My most popular pattern, “A Bouquet of Pansies” sold 5000 copies and won a J&P Coats Golden Needle Award! I was also featured in various cross stitch magazines and designed special projects for the magazines. When my daughter was born I didn’t have the time needed to cross stitch and design patterns all day long so I let my pattern design business slip away. And then I started discovering dolls again and I now had an excuse to start buying them. The only problem was that they were for my daughter and not for me. I soon discovered all of the adult collectors out there and decided I would be one of them. I started small at first, collecting Mattel Kelly dolls. Soon I collected over 100 Kelly dolls! After Kelly, I discovered Helen Kish’s Riley and Tonner’s Ann Estelle. I have since learned to knit doll sweaters and love an excuse to knit so most of my doll outfits include a sweater and/or hat. I love creating miniature outfits for dolls and enjoy sharing them with others. Currently I create doll ensembles for Ruby Red Fashion Friends, Kish Bethany, Dianna Effner's Little Darlings, Wilde Imagination's teeny tiny Amelia, Kaye Wiggs BJD, Boneka 10", Linda Macario's Penny.

Some Things from This Week

This morning I made the last piece to go with Patsy’s Christmas ensemble, the tights.  I don’t know why, but they are always the last thing I make.  We even had time for our photo shoot!  Afterwards, she wanted to go up on the shelf to visit with the other three girls who are all dressed up in their Christmas dresses.  They look so cute together in a group, don’t they?  This is the largest this group of models will get before the Christmas ensembles start going into new closets to dress other little girls for the holidays.  (I always take the photos of the ensembles without their sweaters on last, so that is why no one is wearing one, just in case you were wondering where the sweaters had gone off to.)

It was my husband’s birthday on Wednesday, so happy 29th birthday to him…

… just kidding, he’s really not 29, although he wishes he were 29 again!  I picked up a pizza, lasagna, and spaghetti/meatballs from a favorite carry out spot for dinner.  I know, too much food!  I made a chocolate chip cake (from scratch) for his birthday cake.  I barely had enough frosting; it wasn’t the best choice to make only a half of a recipe, but it was plenty sweet enough in my opinion.chocolate chip birthday cake 869The little beggar is in his favorite spot.  Nope, he didn’t get a crumb of cake, although he got a few bits of pizza crust.

Bye for now!  Talk to you soon!

More Fall Color

Today was a beautiful fall day!  The fall colors seemed oh, so vibrant and probably are at their peak.  As I was outside with my camera, I couldn’t help but think about the smoky air from the leaves being burned, the gentle slightly crisp breeze, and the wispy clouds floating in the very blue sky.

What I’m Working on Today

Hello and, depending on where you live, good morning or good evening!

I took a photo of my desk this morning and wanted to show you the progress on Patsy’s Christmas outfit.  I think that this is the last I can make out of this simple red/green pin dot.  I made two dresses for the Little Darlings out of this 1/2 yard piece of fabric last year and didn’t think there was enough for another dress, but Patsy is small, so there was just enough width and length to cut out her skirt.  Here is a link to Gina’s ensemble from last year.  (Both dresses for Gina were the same.)

I made a quick little drawing of how I want to embroider Patsy’s sweater.  I’ll also need to run to the store for red ribbon; the shade I have is too blue, and I’d like to use organza.  I’m not sure yet what kind of beads I’ll use for the sweater buttons, maybe pearls.  The tiny green buttons are for the dress.  I’m thinking a bow or headband for her hair, but I will see.

That’s all for now my dear readers.

Thank you sooo much for all of your comments; I love them!!!
