About Cindy Rice

My wonderful husband, my beautiful daughter, and I live in northeastern Illinois with our two sweet chihuahua boys. For as long as I can remember I have loved dolls and making things. I got my first Barbie when I was only three years old! My mom sewed for my Barbie dolls and taught me how to use her sewing machine when I was only seven. I cannot believe she let me near that needle, but she did. Not having enough money for my clothes habit in high school and college led me to start sewing all of my own clothes. There were so many fabric stores around back then and fabric was so inexpensive. I would wait for the 99 cent pattern sale and go crazy. Sewing for myself continued well into my 30’s. (I even made my wedding gown and bridesmaid dresses.) Shortly after I got married I left my full time graphic design position and started designing cross stitch patterns. I called my company “The Lilac Studio” and sold my botanical patterns at trade shows, through distributors which sold to retail shops, and mail order. My most popular pattern, “A Bouquet of Pansies” sold 5000 copies and won a J&P Coats Golden Needle Award! I was also featured in various cross stitch magazines and designed special projects for the magazines. When my daughter was born I didn’t have the time needed to cross stitch and design patterns all day long so I let my pattern design business slip away. And then I started discovering dolls again and I now had an excuse to start buying them. The only problem was that they were for my daughter and not for me. I soon discovered all of the adult collectors out there and decided I would be one of them. I started small at first, collecting Mattel Kelly dolls. Soon I collected over 100 Kelly dolls! After Kelly, I discovered Helen Kish’s Riley and Tonner’s Ann Estelle. I have since learned to knit doll sweaters and love an excuse to knit so most of my doll outfits include a sweater and/or hat. I love creating miniature outfits for dolls and enjoy sharing them with others. Currently I create doll ensembles for Ruby Red Fashion Friends, Kish Bethany, Dianna Effner's Little Darlings, Wilde Imagination's teeny tiny Amelia, Kaye Wiggs BJD, Boneka 10", Linda Macario's Penny.

“Blossomy Sprinkles”

Hello to you, my friends! ❤  I hope you’ve been well.

Even though things are moving slowly around here I have two!!! one-of-a-kind ensembles that are all ready to share with you!  I am so excited to show you the first ensemble which is called “Blossomy Sprinkles”.  See the blossoms sprinkled all over this sweet fabric (Pretty Posies Collection) designed by Darlene Zimmerman?  The blossoms reminded me of cupcake sprinkles; hence the title of this ensemble was created. 🙂

My “Blossomy Sprinkles” ensemble will be available tomorrow night (Friday, Sept. 13, 2019) at 7:00 pm CST.   (When it is available for sale the Available tab will highlight this ensemble; you can then click on the title to read more about it.)

For information on how to purchase and my shipping locations please read the Available page.

Meanwhile here are some preview photos.  This ensemble is being modeled by my precious Little Darling Lucy who was painted by Helen Skinner.

I hope you are enjoying the month of September so far.  It has been quite warm and very humid in northern Illinois.  The pollen and mold levels are high and I am feeling the effects of that.  I love the beauty of autumn, but for me, autumn is the time when my outdoor allergies make me feel ‘not so great’.  My ‘cure’ is to stay inside where we have a heavy duty filter on our air conditioning/heating unit. 😉

Bye for now! ❤  Wishing you a great day!

From the Past Month

Ah, once again it’s been so long between posts.  Time goes by so quickly!  I should title this post “From the Past Month Plus”.  It’s been a busy August here simply enjoying the summertime.

After a rainy June, July and August finally felt like summer had arrived and I took full advantage.  I thoroughly enjoyed soaking up my dose from the almost daily sunshine!  It makes me a little sad that September is right around the corner; summer was not long enough in my opinion.  Maybe we will be blessed with a warm-ish and sunny autumn.  Fingers crossed!

Here’s a little peak of a new ensemble I just completed for my Little Darling, Lucy.

My girls have agreed to “share” this ensemble soon.  Lucy wants to wear it for a few more days before “sharing” though.

Do you like dragonflies?  This dragonfly landed right on my finger as soon as I was about to take a photo of Lucy’s cardigan.  It was so unexpected and sweet.  He wanted to stay on my finger too.  I’m probably too impatient; I had to set him elsewhere after a minute or two.

Now for some human knitting news.  I finished my “Rumble in Brighton socks”.  You can read about that yarn in my last blog post.  The yarn is a random speckled yarn, but it knit up looking like micro stripes.  I have no idea why…

My current sock project is self-striping yarn by Urth Yarn’s Uneek Sock base in color #58.  My local yarn store where I purchased it at is 2 Needle Chicks.  I must say the yarn is tons prettier than the photo on the box.  I’ll share the finished pair next time.

If you’re in the U.S. I hope you all have a beautiful Labor Day weekend.  I’ve never heard of this, but my daughter has classes on Labor Day!  I thought the point of Labor day was no labor.  Oh, well…

Bye for now, my friends. ❤

Magnolia and Socks

Hello to you my friends.  I hope you had a wonderful mid July weekend.  (It’s hard to believe it is indeed mid July already!–WOW!)  We are enjoying lots of heat and sunshine here in northern Illinois.  It truly feels like summertime here.  I am enjoying it even though it is super hot.

First I’d like to talk about Magnolia; it occurred to me last week that I never introduced the new addition to my Warm Heart Bears collection.  She arrived about a month ago, and is a panda bear named Magnolia.  I had a panda bear when I was a baby and I loved her so much.  Below is a screenshot from a photo book I made that shows me with my panda (and grandpa).

When I saw that Warm Heart Bears had a panda bear (which was still available 🙂 ) I knew she had to come and join my duo.  And now that I have three of Carolyn’s creations I have a collection.  (I once read that 3 makes a ‘collection’. 😮 )  If you’d like can read about Claudette the giraffe and Ivy’s arrival.  I love my little animal collection!  These three bring a smile to my face every day.  Aren’t they adorable together?… and they all get along swimmingly.

Now for the socks part of this post…

A while back I got it into my head to try dyeing a skein of self striping yarn.  It sounded so nice and simple–not having to weave in ends every time I changed colors.  I wanted 6 stripes–each stripe being 8 rows.  It involved figuring out the yardage for one row (28″) then multiplying that number times the total rows in the repeat (48 rows).  Forty-eight rows times 28″ came to 112 feet or just over 37 yards.

Now I had to turn the original skein into a 37 yard loop!  To make a loop this large I had to head outside.  I had 4 stools arranged on the driveway at points to make a 37 yard loop and walked around and around with the yarn… ’til it was all wound into a GIANT loop.  As I was doing this the yarn blew and stretched between the chairs.  It was crazy.  I wasn’t sure it would work, but I already had time invested in this project, so I kept on.  After winding the yarn, I put figure eight ties on the gigantic skein every yard or so–lots and lots of figure eights to tie.

The dyeing involved dividing the loop into six equal sections and dyeing each one singly.  When that was done I thought I was home free.  Nope!  This mess, and it looked like a mess, needed to be wound into a ball.  I think I spent 3 hours untangling and winding, maybe it even took longer…  I should have brought the stools outside again instead of draping the loop up and down over a bunch of hangers.

The end result is beautiful though, and it was fun knitting with yarn that kept changing color, but… NEVER AGAIN, ugh.  I wish I took photos of the process just to show you the craziness, but I was not in a photo taking state-of-mind, sorry.

Now on to the fun… and calm part of my story.  Below is one sock in progress.  I used an old quilt I made my daughter as inspiration for the colors.  As always (and the only way I know how to knit socks) I used Susan B. Anderson’s Blueprint (Craftsy) class, “My First Toe-Up Socks”.  I love how they turned out.

For the next pair of socks I plan to knit, I purchased someone else’s hand dyed yarn.  I think I deserve to let someone else do the ‘work’ this time, don’t you?  We found this skein of Spun Right Round at our local yarn store, Fiddlehead Yarns.  Doesn’t it look fun?  It’s called “Rumble in Brighton”.

By the way, am I the only one who winds their yarn by hand into balls?  I have yet to purchase a yarn swift and ball winder.

I hope you have a beautiful week!  Thank you so much for visiting with me today. ❤
