Oh Where, Oh Where is Spring?

While I cannot say it is totally springlike here, we are moving towards it.  Over the last 4-5 days we have lost lots of snow with above freezing temps and lots of sun.  Large areas of grass are starting to appear and they’re sort of green…well, in some places!

Update:  I wrote this post this morning and as of now (the evening) it seems like there is less snow and more grass showing.  What a huge difference a day makes!

No sign of bulb gardens starting in northern Illinois yet, though.  For a preview of what is to come, a beautiful bulb garden is in full bloom on Pukipuki Sugar’s dress.  And, the best part is that it is an everlasting reminder of our fleeting spring flower gardens.

Sugar has embroidered tulips in three shades, yellow daffodils, tiny grape hyacinths (yes, they smell like grape), and the ever fragrant hyacinths in purple (blue), white, and pink.  In our previous house all of these bloomed in my garden every year.

What will be blooming in your spring garden?

Pink tulips, daffodils, multi-colored hyacinths, and grape hyacinths are blooming all around the hemline of Sugar’s dress.

‘Tis the Season of Green, of Greening, and New Growth

St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner.  When I was growing up this holiday wasn’t celebrated unless one was Irish (or that’s what I was told).  Not being Irish, St. Patrick’s Day came and went in my family.  These days everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day and March is the month of green.

I do love green even though I cannot wear most shades of it.  I think teal or turquoise are my only choices, but it’s the spring greens, the mint greens, and yellow greens that I love so much.  Put those colors next to my face and it’s not a good look to say it nicely.  Put those colors on my fair skinned Talyssa and magic happens.  She is truly a gal that looks wonderful in green.  So naturally, she was my choice to receive something new during this 2015 season of green.

Talyssa wanted a little posy to hold. I made her this one with crocheted blossoms and used macrame to combine all of “stems” together. I also wanted to bring more pink into the outfit.

Blue Roses for a Blue Lady

For some reason the words to the song “Red Roses for a Blue Lady” kept going through my mind as I worked on this ensemble; only I had the title wrong.  I thought it was “Blue Roses for a Blue Lady”.  Funny, huh?

I wasn’t even born when this song was first released in 1948, and when it became popular again in 1965, I was very young.  I do remember hearing it, although, I have no idea who the vocalist was when it was being played on the radio.  For some reason, the song’s melody and the (wrong) words have stuck with me all these years.

Although blue roses are not found in nature, they would be so beautiful if they were.  In 2004, a white rose was genetically engineered to make a blue rose, but it is more of a mauve color than a blue color.  Roses that look like blue roses are actually made by dyeing white roses.

My Little Darling Gina loves her new spring ensemble featuring a print of sky blue roses.  Yes, they don’t exist in nature, but who cares.  This fabric print is so adorable in blue.  I know my grandmother had pillowcases with blue roses.  I might even have a couple of her’s in my linen closet.

There was just a hint of red violet in this print to pick it out and add some extra color to this springtime ensemble for the Little Darlings.

After I wrote this post, I went looking to see if I indeed had a blue rose pillowcase from Grandma.  Look what I found!
