Who can resist a sale of fabrics and notions? Not I! Not I…even in a pouring down rainstorm. You all who are sewers or makers know exactly what I’m talking about. A sale of fabric and notions doesn’t come around often?
I met this woman at a nearby garage sale this summer. She was helping out at her friend’s garage sale and had some of her ribbons, buttons, and quilt kits there. I bought lots of her buttons and ribbon by the way. Tiny mother-of-pearl buttons and silk ribbon spools for 20 cents each! Come on… are you kidding me?
I asked her about small scale fabric and she told me how she had bought out her friend’s quilt shop in Texas and had tons of fabric to get rid of sell over at her house, but it probably wouldn’t be until September, so of course I gave her my email.
I haven’t made any dresses for the Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes yet and I really want to. I needed some one yard cuts for these, so that was my main reason to venture out in the rain this morning. 😮 and 😉 (As if I needed a reason.)
It was so much fun. It was like a fabric store in her basement. And she had a beautiful basement (with a kitchen) at that–a most gorgeous house from what I saw! She had a cutting table set up where she had a helper cutting fabric. At another station her sister (I think) was in charge of adding up purchases and collecting cash. All the while she kept bringing out more fabric!!!
Her quilting room was painted the most wonderful shade of lilac. She said the color was called muddy lilac or something like that. It was a very rich color of lilac and very calming, I felt. It didn’t look muddy at all, simply perfect.
Here’s what I found for the girls’ dresses.
The first two fabrics (below) are my favorites for my doll ensembles.
I found these buttons–$1 for all! The carrots for Easter bunnies and baskets, the apples for fall outfits, and the candy canes to use now.
Below are the rest of the fabrics for doll clothes. Some are only fat quarters, so I’ll need to sew side seams on the skirt, but it’ll work fine.
I love yellow and the tiny bits of lavender and grey are really pretty with these shades of yellow.
This fabric is a very pretty light powder blue. I hope the scale isn’t too large. Maybe it’ll at least work for my Kaye Wiggs’ dolls.
Lily-of-the-valley! My favorite flower! Maybe this will become a pincushion. The print is a little large, but I love it!
I just realized that these look like daffodils, don’t they? They are very tiny.
Very soft and delicate. Isn’t it sweet?
I wish you could have come with me! ❤
Oh my goodness, I am drooling all over my keyboard. Wonderful stuff! and I know you will make splendid things with it.
Oops, sorry about your keyboard–ha ha. It was definitely a drool worthy experience! Thanks, Kathleen. ❤
Neither snow or rain nor heat nor gloom of night stops these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds, and I’m not talking about the post people, but many of us on a fabric quest! How wonderful seeing all of the great finds.
The fabric for the girls is perfect. Since we are near the end of September, I’m sure you will get right on the dresses/boxes.
My favorite fabric is definitely the tiny daffodils. I can just picture a sweet white or green sweater to accompany it. 🙂
Trying to sew some lace on a dolly skirt. Best get back to it before I lose my mojo.
Hi, Joy. I hope you got your lace sewed on your skirt. I’ll bet it’s beautiful! Judging by the amount of cars parked on her street when I pulled up (in the pouring rain, a mere 45 minutes after the sale started) I know you are right in that not much can stop us from fabric hunting. I think I had better get a schedule started for the dresses–only 5 this year–piece of cake; but then I only have about 6 weeks. I am glad you like the daffodils and your idea of a green sweater! So pretty and fresh. It’ll be a wonderful spring welcome for 2020. I hope your swelling has gone down and the wind has died down along with the temps. Thank you, Joy. ❤ Enjoy the weekend!
You certainly will be busy with all the beautiful fabric, buttons and ribbons, Cindy! So much fun to look at!
Thank you, Linda. I sure will be busy! ❤
Wouah, quelle belle trouvaille, et pas cher du tout, c’est parfait !
Wow, what a great find, and not expensive at all, it’s perfect !
Hello, Patricia. It was definitely a lucky find, and fun too. I hope you have a very nice weekend. ❤
Oh Cindy, I wish I could have been there as well!! Enjoy working with your goodies!!
Hi, Gwendolyn. You would have had fun–gotten a little wet, but worth it! Thank you. Enjoy the weekend. ❤
Lucky you! Wish I could have been with you 🙂
Hi, Pat. You would have loved it!!! Despite the rain, everyone crowded in her large basement was in a good mood. Enjoy the weekend! ❤
ouah !!!!!!!!!! bravo c est magnifique
Hi, Marie. Thank you! It was so much fun! I hope you are enjoying the weekend. ❤
or
Yes, I am glad the rain didn't keep me from going to this fabric sale too. In addition to finding some great fabric it was fun! Much more fun than staying home! ❤
i had this same experience. A woman was selling out her former dance costume making business. She had a lawn sale which I went to. I just stood there with my mouth hanging open. As we got talking she took me downstairs to the basement where she had all the rest of her fabric stored. OMG She wasn’t ready to sell that yet but she said I could call her in a couple of months to see what was happening. Needless to say I bought what my budget could stand. Even though I don’t make a lot of things from that type of fabric I knew I could make gymnastic outfits for my granddaughters and our dolls, bathing suits, leggings, shorts. What a score.
Hi, Gail. Oh, that sounds like fun! I’ll bet your granddaughters have an extensive wardrobe from your haul. Impossible to pass up these offerings, isn’t it? Thanks for sharing. ❤
How fun to get all those buttons Cindy ! It was good you asked about fabric too! I am sure the room was nice being painted lilac. It sounds like a lot of fun for you . Those dresses will look so nice with those first two fabrics, and the buttons so cute! Lily of the valley is very pretty and the other print does look like daffodils! It will be exciting times ahead for the Girls. I am sure it would have been fun for me to tag along with you Cindy. Have a great day, Terri xo.
Hi, Terri. I would have loved your company most definitely. I need to start sewing those dresses soon. I think I will (maybe) get the pockets put together today. I’ve been fighting a cold all week and have finally surrendered to it–not feeling so great today. I’ve already had two cups of tea and will probably have many more along with some ibuprofen–and lots of rest. I hope you and your family is staying healthy. It seems like everyone is sick around here
Enjoy your Friday. It’s rainy here and supposed to get quite cold later. No more flowers after today. 😦 So sad!
That is so sweet of you to say Cindy! I don’t know if I would be any help purchasing any of the Fabrics! I feel so bad for you having a cold. I get one or two each year myself. Definitely get plenty of rest and ibuprofen ( nurse Terri’s orders) to get you back to health. You are getting the rain that we had yesterday and it was an icky day here. Today is a little bit of rain but a lot of wind. Anyway happy Friday to you Cindy, sending warm hugs, Terri xo.
Aww, sure you would. I’d enjoy your company anyway.
I’m feeling much better this morning, thanks Terri. ❤
Today it is sunny, windy, and cold. It sounds like what you had yesterday. You could be my weather forecaster. 🙂
Have a great weekend. Fall is here! ❤
Aww thank you for that, I am sure you are very nice to be with also. I am glad you are feeling better and following orders!! Yesterday was cold rainy and windy, then it turned to snow in the afternoon and evening , then again this morning it snowed but did not stay long. Now it is is cloudy with a little wind, and 36f. I hope it stays warmer for you. Take care Dear, Terri xo
Ugh, SNOW!!! It’s too early!
