About Cindy Rice

My wonderful husband, my beautiful daughter, and I live in northeastern Illinois with our two sweet chihuahua boys. For as long as I can remember I have loved dolls and making things. I got my first Barbie when I was only three years old! My mom sewed for my Barbie dolls and taught me how to use her sewing machine when I was only seven. I cannot believe she let me near that needle, but she did. Not having enough money for my clothes habit in high school and college led me to start sewing all of my own clothes. There were so many fabric stores around back then and fabric was so inexpensive. I would wait for the 99 cent pattern sale and go crazy. Sewing for myself continued well into my 30’s. (I even made my wedding gown and bridesmaid dresses.) Shortly after I got married I left my full time graphic design position and started designing cross stitch patterns. I called my company “The Lilac Studio” and sold my botanical patterns at trade shows, through distributors which sold to retail shops, and mail order. My most popular pattern, “A Bouquet of Pansies” sold 5000 copies and won a J&P Coats Golden Needle Award! I was also featured in various cross stitch magazines and designed special projects for the magazines. When my daughter was born I didn’t have the time needed to cross stitch and design patterns all day long so I let my pattern design business slip away. And then I started discovering dolls again and I now had an excuse to start buying them. The only problem was that they were for my daughter and not for me. I soon discovered all of the adult collectors out there and decided I would be one of them. I started small at first, collecting Mattel Kelly dolls. Soon I collected over 100 Kelly dolls! After Kelly, I discovered Helen Kish’s Riley and Tonner’s Ann Estelle. I have since learned to knit doll sweaters and love an excuse to knit so most of my doll outfits include a sweater and/or hat. I love creating miniature outfits for dolls and enjoy sharing them with others. Currently I create doll ensembles for Ruby Red Fashion Friends, Kish Bethany, Dianna Effner's Little Darlings, Wilde Imagination's teeny tiny Amelia, Kaye Wiggs BJD, Boneka 10", Linda Macario's Penny.

In Love with Autumn

Hello!  Hello!  Hello! 🙂  I hope you’ve had a beautiful week and weekend!  I made my week busy by choosing to spend lots of time outside soaking up this autumnal season.  I spent two days at the Chicago Botanic Gardens and one day exploring a new to me forest preserve.  I feel quite rested and rejuvenated.

Below photo is from the “new” forest preserve.

And the photo below was taken in the Rose Garden at the Chicago Botanic Gardens.

However, even though I spent so much time outdoors, I did get a bit of knitting done this past week.  I am working on two more sweater dresses for the Little Darlings.  I think I am addicted to sweater dresses for my girls.  Anyone else feel the same about sweater dresses?  I DO LOVE them!  I keep knitting more and more!

The green one is almost finished–only a few more rows.  I am using my Sweater Dress pattern, but changed it up by making a wide garter neckline to look Santa-like.  The hemline will have a “fur” band also.  A Santa hat will most likely be in order for this one.

The pretty blue (love this shade of blue) sweater dress has long sleeves (my first for a Little Darling sweater dress) and narrow “fur” trim at the edges.  I blocked the first sleeve right after it was completed, and while it was still flat.

I am liking these two so much–getting excited for them to be completed.  I hope to soon be rid of the ‘sweater dress making bug’ and do some sewing of Christmas dresses (with cardigans or capes, of course) next.  You’ve seen my pile of Christmas fabrics; they really need some attention.

We have lots of small lakes around here and many of our forest preserves include paths around them.

This one had a boat launch, fishing pier, and lookout points at different spots around the lake.  There were some lookout areas with large flat rocks that I thought would be nice for taking pictures of my dolls.

I don’t have any little ones, but for those that do the playground here looks like a lot of fun.  I love the super huge frog, turtle, and beaver.  My daughter is taking a herpetology class (study of amphibians) so the frog and turtle are quite timely.  (I sent her photos. 😉 )

I wonder if at some time lightening hit this tree.  Regardless, it had a nice sculptural quality to it, so I took a photo of it.

Of course you know I cannot resist photographing mushrooms.

My two visits to the Chicago Botanic Gardens were a little different.  My first visit on Monday was spent exploring my favorite gardens:  English Walled, Japanese, Rose, Heritage to name a few.  Then, on Thursday I dropped my daughter off for her one class and her choir practice and then drove to the gardens for a few hours.  This time I decided to walk the perimeter of the entire place to go through the prairie, around the test greenhouses and test science center.  I felt like I was ‘behind the scenes’ at some points.

I discovered the McDonald Woods which are in the process of being restored.  At the entrance is a shelter with a fireplace.  It looked like it had been used and there was a log in it.  So cute!

While walking around the perimeter, I found myself on the other side of the Japanese Garden islands.  I’ve often seen people sitting on the benches here and wondered how they got over there.  Now I know how.

Flowers are still blooming here.  Lots of mums and asters everywhere.

Not sure what the blossoms below are called–do you know?  They seem to be some sort of fall flowering bulb?

And in my own back yard I still have flowers as the frost stayed away from the house.

Today, it is sunny and warm–so beautiful!  Even though the temperature is warm the look of the landscape is changing–gone are the deep greens which are being replaced by golds, oranges, reds, and browns.

How is autumn shaping up where you live?

Thank you for stopping by today.  Enjoy the week ahead! ❤

The Past Couple of Weeks

Hello to you from rainy, rainy, rainy! northern Illinois.  The rain has been coming down since last night.  It’s still warm at the moment, but we are in for a big change later on today.  So the rain will stop, but then it will get cold!  Cold like we haven’t seen for many months.  Not ready!  This temperature drop will seem like a slap in the face.  OW!

These past couple of weeks have been beautiful though.  I’ve been getting outside most days for walks in the sunshine and to simply enjoy nature.  We have quite a few forest preserves around here and also some quiet roads.  Last weekend I visited one of the nearby forest preserves.

At one point on the trail it was an open expanse as far as the eye could see.

The colors of fall are showing up in the plants, but not yet the trees (except here and there).

When I have portable work and don’t feel like staying at home to do it I like to visit nearby coffee shops; this one is so cute.  It has 5 rooms with tables and chairs in each.  I think I previously showed you a photo when my daughter and I spent a Friday afternoon here. My favorite room is this south facing room with these big windows.

Here is a look into the main room while I was working on my knitting.

And here is another room off of the room I was in.  The doorway to the left shows a room for the little ones.  There are lots of toys in there.  I’ve never seen any children using it; perhaps they are here at different times.

The dress I was knitting while at the coffee shop is now completed:  knit, blocked, buttons added…

… and Gina modeling it.  Here’s a sneak peak from my sewing room this morning.  I want to add a little more embroidery (it’s at the hemline) and a pretty red ribbon around the waist.  I have the perfect little accessory for her to hold; I’ll show you later.  Both girls still need tights and I want to come up with an accessory for Alice.  So, these two ensembles are almost completed.

Now, I must go get some rest.  I’ve been fighting a cold all week (my husband brought one home from traveling over a week ago!).  I thought I had succeeded in not catching it, but no.  Today I know I am definitely sick.  At least the weather matches my symptoms!

I hope you are well and enjoying beautiful weather where you are.  Thank you for stopping by, my friends. ❤

Wanna See My Fabric, etc. Haul?

Who can resist a sale of fabrics and notions?  Not I!  Not I…even in a pouring down rainstorm.  You all who are sewers or makers know exactly what I’m talking about.  A sale of fabric and notions doesn’t come around often?

I met this woman at a nearby garage sale this summer.  She was helping out at her friend’s garage sale and had some of her ribbons, buttons, and quilt kits there.  I bought lots of her buttons and ribbon by the way.  Tiny mother-of-pearl buttons and silk ribbon spools for 20 cents each!  Come on… are you kidding me?

I asked her about small scale fabric and she told me how she had bought out her friend’s quilt shop in Texas and had tons of fabric to get rid of sell over at her house, but it probably wouldn’t be until September, so of course I gave her my email.

I haven’t made any dresses for the Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes yet and I really want to.  I needed some one yard cuts for these, so that was my main reason to venture out in the rain this morning. 😮 and 😉  (As if I needed a reason.)

It was so much fun.  It was like a fabric store in her basement.  And she had a beautiful basement (with a kitchen) at that–a most gorgeous house from what I saw!  She had a cutting table set up where she had a helper cutting fabric.  At another station her sister (I think) was in charge of adding up purchases and collecting cash.  All the while she kept bringing out more fabric!!!

Her quilting room was painted the most wonderful shade of lilac.  She said the color was called muddy lilac or something like that.  It was a very rich color of lilac and very calming, I felt.  It didn’t look muddy at all, simply perfect.

Here’s what I found for the girls’ dresses.

The first two fabrics (below) are my favorites for my doll ensembles.

I found these buttons–$1 for all!  The carrots for Easter bunnies and baskets, the apples for fall outfits, and the candy canes to use now.

Below are the rest of the fabrics for doll clothes.  Some are only fat quarters, so I’ll need to sew side seams on the skirt, but it’ll work fine.

I love yellow and the tiny bits of lavender and grey are really pretty with these shades of yellow.

This fabric is a very pretty light powder blue.  I hope the scale isn’t too large.  Maybe it’ll at least work for my Kaye Wiggs’ dolls.

Lily-of-the-valley!  My favorite flower!  Maybe this will become a pincushion.  The print is a little large, but I love it!

I just realized that these look like daffodils, don’t they?  They are very tiny.

Very soft and delicate.  Isn’t it sweet?
