“Delicate Summertime”

It’s my little Kaye Wiggs Millie’s turn to show you something new.  She doesn’t get a whole lot of attention, so when she does it’s very exciting for her. 🙂

For Millie’s ensemble I used a Japanese cotton floral fabric that I purchased in 2012.  It’s from Lecien’s Flower Sugar 2012 collection.  The colors in this print are crystal clear, not neutral at all.  Also, the light blue is perfectly blue, not going towards aqua or the other way, to violet.

Millie’s light pink cotton sweater is an embroidered garden of bullion stitched roses and colonial knot flowers.

Of course, since it’s summertime, a wide brimmed hat is in order to keep the sun out of Millie’s baby blue eyes.  This crocheted hat is made with 3 different strands of white in two thread weights and two different fibers, cotton and bamboo.  I added a shell edging in the same pink as used for the cardigan.  The brim can be turned up or down, or one side up for a jaunty look.  The hat’s band is made with the same fabric as used for the dress.  A little hand made bow is made with the same organza ribbon used for the waistline sash on the dress.  I’ve added a row of tiny white pearls to the center of the bow.

Millie’s accessories include a crocheted basket, so fine and tiny, and a bouquet of bright pink flowers.  A bracelet and pink tights are also included with her new ensemble.

“Blossoms for the Bees”

We’ve had so many bumblebees buzzing around our garden this spring.  I love watching the fuzzy little guys, and how they almost disappear inside trumpet-shaped blossom.  I don’t have any snapdragons growing in my garden this year, but I have in past years, and they really do disappear inside these blossoms, so cute.

Keeping with the bee theme, Gracie is wearing a dress covered in trios of bright blossoms which are on a subtle hexagon honeycomb background.

Gracie’s dress has a wider neckline which looks pretty with shrugs.  The hemline is embellished with cotton tatting lace that I applied by hand.  The lace was a gift, but I am guessing it is vintage and handmade.  The circles on the lace look perfect with the circle-shaped flowers, and the lace’s color matches the fabric exactly.

Gracie’s yummy lace shrug is knit with lace weight merino wool in red violet heather.  It has a crocheted shell edging.

I thought a hexi-shaped purse would be so cute with this ensemble.  This one is made with two crocheted granny hexagons and a leather strap.  It can be worn cross body, over the shoulder, or wrapped around Gracie’s hand.  Inside the bag is a little bouquet of flowers.  There is even a little extra room for other found treasures.  In my stash I had one bumble bee button.  He found his way onto Gracie’s granny square blossom.

Gracie’s hair decoration is made by hand with three colors of crocheted merino wool blossoms which pick up the colors in the dress.  I’ve added a little green merino wool leaf and a handmade organza bow.  It slips in place with a handmade wire bobby pin.

Anklets, panties, and a bracelet complete this summery ensemble.

Take some time today to watch the bumblebees!  Thanks for visiting with me today, my lovely friends.

“Strawberry Season”

Did you know that May is National (U.S.) Strawberry Month?  I just found out from this list at national calendar.com.  Fortunately, I have a strawberry themed ensemble all ready to go for this holiday.  (ha ha)  It is kind of fun to be tuned in to the minor holidays though, planned or not.

Our strawberry season hasn’t kicked in yet.  Here in northern Illinois, mid June is when our berries will be ready to pick.  My Kaye Wiggs Gracie is all ready to go picking, and somehow even found a few early strawberries.  Hmm, wonder how she managed that.

Gracie’s basket of berries is hand made by me.  The fabric berries are stuffed with poly fiberfill, so are very light weight.  The berries are machine sewn; the wool felt berry tops are hand embroidered.  I found white flower beads in my stash that look like strawberry blossoms!  A yellow seed bead for the center completes the strawberry blossom.  The stems are beaded loops so that Gracie can hold them.  The basket is woven with strips of mint green scrapbook paper, and it holds the berries perfectly.  I made a little hand written tag with the name of the ensemble on it; it dangles from the handle.

Even Gracie’s bracelet is berry themed.  White berry blossom beads, yellow seed beads (blossom centers) and green seed beads (stems) are strung on stretchy jewelry cord.  The tiny red heart bead (to show that this set was made with great care and love) even looks like a strawberry!

Gracie’s cotton dress is of the palest cool pink.  The berries and mint green leaves have a hand painted look to them which I find very pretty and delicate, despite being brightly colored.  The white blossoms and doily shapes are subtle, but add to the delicateness of this print.  The white inset cotton English Cluny lace I added to the skirt is the perfect accent.

The hand knit lace shrug is made with bamboo thread.  It has a crocheted ruffle edging.

The wide brimmed hat is embellished with a band made from the dress fabric.  I appliquéd a wool felt strawberry to the hat that coordinates with the handmade berries.

All in all, I think Gracie is looking ready to celebrate National Strawberry Month, don’t you?
