About Cindy Rice

My wonderful husband, my beautiful daughter, and I live in northeastern Illinois with our two sweet chihuahua boys. For as long as I can remember I have loved dolls and making things. I got my first Barbie when I was only three years old! My mom sewed for my Barbie dolls and taught me how to use her sewing machine when I was only seven. I cannot believe she let me near that needle, but she did. Not having enough money for my clothes habit in high school and college led me to start sewing all of my own clothes. There were so many fabric stores around back then and fabric was so inexpensive. I would wait for the 99 cent pattern sale and go crazy. Sewing for myself continued well into my 30’s. (I even made my wedding gown and bridesmaid dresses.) Shortly after I got married I left my full time graphic design position and started designing cross stitch patterns. I called my company “The Lilac Studio” and sold my botanical patterns at trade shows, through distributors which sold to retail shops, and mail order. My most popular pattern, “A Bouquet of Pansies” sold 5000 copies and won a J&P Coats Golden Needle Award! I was also featured in various cross stitch magazines and designed special projects for the magazines. When my daughter was born I didn’t have the time needed to cross stitch and design patterns all day long so I let my pattern design business slip away. And then I started discovering dolls again and I now had an excuse to start buying them. The only problem was that they were for my daughter and not for me. I soon discovered all of the adult collectors out there and decided I would be one of them. I started small at first, collecting Mattel Kelly dolls. Soon I collected over 100 Kelly dolls! After Kelly, I discovered Helen Kish’s Riley and Tonner’s Ann Estelle. I have since learned to knit doll sweaters and love an excuse to knit so most of my doll outfits include a sweater and/or hat. I love creating miniature outfits for dolls and enjoy sharing them with others. Currently I create doll ensembles for Ruby Red Fashion Friends, Kish Bethany, Dianna Effner's Little Darlings, Wilde Imagination's teeny tiny Amelia, Kaye Wiggs BJD, Boneka 10", Linda Macario's Penny.

It’s My Little Darling, Gina’s Turn

…for a Valentine’s Day sweater dress.

Don’t you think this is the perfect time of year for cozy and pretty knit dresses?  They are so comfy, easy to wear, and they keep you nice and toasty warm.

sweethearts & roses 316“Sweethearts and Roses”, Gina’s new outfit, started out  with her tights.  I’ve had this cotton knit for years and have never got around to using it.  It is really a sweet print with lots of different  hearts in pinks and reds.  There’s even a bit of silver in there for a touch of little girl sparkle.  I matched my yarn to the warm pink hearts and knit up an a-line dress that is short enough to let those tights look, oh, so cute.  I embroidered two large asymmetrical groups of roses, rosebuds, and hearts at the dropped waistline.  Extra pops of color are added with a touch of bright lavender and light yellow green.  You’ll find more hearts and love for you in Gina’s jewelry.  Her simple grosgrain headband snaps in back so it doesn’t need to be retied each time.

A Peek Inside My Studio

It’s funny how some days just plan themselves out for you…

Last Saturday morning I walked into my studio not knowing what I was going to work on first.  Well, I thought, I can finally put away my new yarn (yes, the yarn I purchased in November).  In it went, into my fingering weight bin.  Uh, oh, problem!  Way too crowded in there.  No way can I rummage through there looking for a particular color.

yarn 768Time to organize!  This one little problem got me started on a task that took most of the day.  I needed to clear out some bins so I could see these beautiful new yarns, but where to put those other things?  I’ve had this little dresser in the basement storing…bubble wrap…yes, that’s correct.  I keep all that stuff.  You never know when you’ll need it for packing up whatever needs to be packed up.  I brought the dresser up to my studio and filled it with boring white fabric, some props that always look messy, and knit fabric that’s impossible to keep looking neat.  I now had lots of space to spread out my beautiful yarn.

If anyone has a solution for storing spools of ribbon please let me know. The pant hangers I use show what I have, but it is hard to get at the spools farthest away from the ends.

I now have 5 bins for my fingering weight yarn where as before I only had one. There’s even room for more… 🙂

Here's the little dresser which now gives me a place to put my serger. :)

While I was at it I snapped some pictures to show you where I (mostly) work.  I do tend to spread out into the rest of the house although I try not to, even though I have a very patient  family.

My studio is in a tiny room off of the family room.  When we bought the house it was listed as a bedroom, but was being used as an exercise room.  I took the closet doors off to make the room seem roomier and removed the vinyl vertical blind slats off of the window treatment and hung up some white cotton sheets onto the headrail.  That’s about all I did.  After 6+ years I still haven’t gotten around to painting the paneling or removing the wall paper.  It all takes time and I’d rather be creating than painting walls.  I guess if it bothered me enough I would make changes, but it is okay as is.

At one time these DMC floss cabinets were all filled with embroidery floss. Now, with the inserts removed, they are perfect for organizing all sorts of things.

You can see that I haven’t yet put away the fabric that I bought in December.  Maybe next month?  Hopefully I will have room for that.

So, that’s my little creative corner of the world (house).  It is small, but cozy, and a nice place to spend my time being creative.

Things Are Looking “Love-ly” Around the Studio

Hearts…and roses…and chocolate (yum)…and everything pink and red…

You know the day…Valentine’s Day, and it’s fast approaching.

Ever since I finished up Christmas and winter outfits for the girls I’ve been surrounded by pink and red fabric, yarn, embroidery thread, beads, and all kinds of heart motifs.  I love these pretty things in the middle of winter.

My Kaye Wiggs Millie is here to show you her brand new embroidered sweater dress, striped tights, pink hair bow, and bracelet set.  The creation of this outfit actually started with the striped tights which left Millie sitting around wearing not much else until the sweater dress was finished.  The poor girl got a bit chilly, I think, but she didn’t complain.

The dress is hand knit in natural Peruvian Highland wool and embroidered with pink/red bullion stitched roses and rosebuds, two kinds of sky blue beads, and a delicate strand of neutral green thread for the leaves and stems.  Millie has a rosy pink knitted headband that ties in a bow to hold back her long, beautiful blonde locks.  A pink bugle bead bracelet with a heart and rose dangling from it complete this outfit.
